A Brief Note On Fighting Against Childhood Obesity
Shayne Steffen Mrs.Gordon Language Arts 5 2, March 2016 NCOF: Fighting Against Childhood Obesity In 2006, about 15% of all children and teens, ages 6-19, were obese (Eberstadt 45). How do you maintain a healthy weight? A healthy weight is reached by balancing the number of calories you eat with the number of calories you use. Weight gain occurs when the number of calories you eat is greater than the number of calories you use (Beliefnet 1). The National Childhood Obesity Foundation (NCOF), is working to eliminate childhood obesity by promoting physical activity and proper nutrition through mascots, holding events such as walks for education, and research, and teaching with a program called THINK. That is how it worked then and that is still how it works today. From 1990-2013, the obese infant/young children increased from 32 million to 42 million. If current trends hold, approximately 70 million children will be obese by the year 2025. (See figure one) Over 10 years, the obesity rate in Africa rose from 4-9 million (If Current Trends Hold 1). Due to the fact that fast food is easy to access, we tend to go towards that food. With many children obese, sports are harder to play which can bring down their participation grades. The number ofartworks lost because of their impermanence can only be imagined, since many were created byusing organic materials subject to destruction by fire, flood, and decay. According to one widely accepted story, the paintings were discovered in1941 by children playing in a field. Deep within those caves, early artists had painted humansand animal figures and weapons, using mixtures of yellow and red ochre-natural found in ironore. In spite of fragile nature of material used in these paintings, the images have survived. Inplaces, the walls are nearly covered with stylized figures representing animals that inhabitedwestern Europe 15,00 years ago. It is one thing to represent an animal with proportionalaccuracy, but quite another to express its nature and movement. These unnamed artists capturedthe essence of the animals, by using expressive lines and subtle colors. Because most of the record of the people of the Paleolithic period has been destroyed bynatural as well as human forces, we will never know with certainty the purposes of their artobjects. They may have been used in religious rituals related to some aspect of the hunt: theymay have express recognition of the common sprit among living things. Nationalism DBQ free essay sample
During the time of the French Revolution, the French peoples expressed great pride in their nation. Eventually nationalism spread to other people, inspiring uprisings across Europe and in Latin America. In the 1860ââ¬â¢s, the unification of Italy was lead by nationalism. By the year 1871, Germany had united as well. Outside of Europe, nationalist movements took root in India, Turkey and various other places. Amongst the Jews, a movement arose to create a separate Jewish state in Palestine. As the 1800ââ¬â¢s drew to an end, nationalistic forces created tensions in the Balkans that served as a catalyst for a world war. Revolution and war in the late 1700ââ¬â¢s created a strong sense of national unity in France. This feeling inspired French armies to success on the battlefield as they fought to spread the ideas of their Revolution. According to Document #1, the French people felt very strongly of their country, many of which are described in Levee en Masse. We will write a custom essay sample on Nationalism DBQ or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Also in Document #2, the feeling of pride is clearly stated in their anthem (Marseillaise). Napoleon also inspired nationalism amongst the nations he conquered. However, these nationalistic feelings encouraged these conquered people to rise up against Napoleon. During the years following the French Revolution, nationalism led to disaster in Europe and elsewhere. Nationalism was not always positive; it also served as a source of conflict in the Balkan peninsula of southeastern Europe. During the 1800ââ¬â¢s, the Ottoman Empire still ruled much of the area, which was considered home for various groups. These groups were the Serbs, Greeks, Bulgarians, and Romanians. In the 1800ââ¬â¢s, nationalistic groups in the Balkans rebelled against the rule of foreigners. Nations in Europe hoped to gain land from the Ottoman Empire. France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary and Russia all formed an alliance and designed wars in order to gain territory from the Ottoman Empire. A nationalistic movement sponsored by Russia called Pan Slavism, based on the idea that all of the Slavic people shared a similar nationality. Russia supported Serbia because of its large Slavic population. However, Serbian nationalism was feared by Austria-Hungary and angeredà Serbia by conquering two provinces that wouldââ¬â¢ve given Serbia access to the Adriatic Sea in 1908. Eventually in the beginning of the 1900ââ¬â¢s, after a series of continuous conflicts within the Balkan Peninsula, tensions created a full out global conflict (World War I). The last time Italy was united was before the fall of the Roman Empire in the 400ââ¬â¢s. Some of the Italian states were united into the Kingdom of Italy, after Napoleon invaded Italy. The Congress of Vienna redivided Italy and put most of it under Spanish and Austrian control. Mentioned in Document #3 Count Camillo Cavour was the prime minister of the Italian State of Sardinia. He formed alliances with France and eventually with Prussia. He used both war and diplomacy to extinguish Austrian power from Italy. Also mentioned in Document #4 Giuseppe Garibaldi was a soldier who led forces that won control of southern Italy and helped unify northern Italy. By 1861, Victor Emmanuel of Sardinia was crowned the king of a, once again, united Italy. The urban North often quarreled with the rural South. The Catholic Church also resisted the new government. Even though there was economic growth, unrest increased in the late 1800ââ¬â¢s. Beginning in the late 1700ââ¬â¢, nationalism became a major force that inspired uprisings all across Europe and Latin America. In the mid 1800ââ¬â¢s, nationalism created two very strong and united nations (Italy and Germany), also shown in map A form Document #7. Nationalistic attitudes spread amongst the Indian, Turkish, Jewish peoples. Nationalism did not always bring people together, in the early 1900ââ¬â¢s nationalism made problems in southeastern Europe that led the country to the edge of a possible war.

What role did women play in the Solidarity Movement during Communism Research Paper
What role did women play in the Solidarity Movement during Communism in Poland - Research Paper Example The thesis of the research to be undertaken is the assessment of the role that women played in the Solidarity Movement during Communism in Poland, particularly how they helped in abolishing Communism in Poland. The proposed research can prove to be significant to the government in establishing the potential in women as leaders and to artists as it can enable them make proper and informed judgments when depicting womenââ¬â¢s resistance of communism in their works. In addition, it can provide students with useful information on the significance of women in abolishing of communism in Poland while scholars would have established research to further explore or expand upon the dethroning of communism in Poland. In a personal interview on December 22, 2000 by Levy and his co-authors, Biedak asserts that on introduction of the martial law, the military that took over rounded up and arrested most of the Solidarityââ¬â¢s leaders at a time they had come together for a significant meeting. They paid little attention to women in arresting them since their work, as the support staff of the men who signed their names to articles and made the speeches, was largely invisible. Having escaped arrest, seven women two days later undertook the first steps in the lengthy protest march that dethroned communism in Poland in the 1980s. They started Solidarity over as an underground organization and took upon themselves the crucial obligation of preserving its authority and voice thus preventing its vanishing. In their first meeting, while six of them sat down to find the way forward, one of them by the name Ewa Kulik, who Penn personally interviewed, took on the responsibility of contacting and finding any of the elected Solidarity leaders who managed to escape arrest. She found Kulerski first, then Bujak, both of whom had been hiding in homes in Ursus (Penn, 2006). During the time when the male leadership was

Global Issues - Essay Example In the Hurricane Katrina, one of the international disasters, the role of the state in providing human security came under sharp criticism. The state failed to provide the required human security, resulting to the severe impact of the Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina is one of the largest natural disasters that US has encountered in its history. The hurricane left over 1800 people dead and ten thousands were left homeless and lacking basic essentials, making it the deadliest and most destructive disasters in the US. Moynihan notes that the response plan for the disaster was integrative and involved both the intergovernmental and international actors.1 However, it is indisputable that the US government was responsible for preparing for such a calamity as well its alleviation as part of its obligations to provide human security within the country. However, in the disaster response plan, the government was inefficient in collecting the bodies of the victims as well as coordinating the international actors. The whole process was punctuated with disagreements especially on the assignment of the rescue responsibilities. Resultantly, the state was unable to act swiftly to reduce losses and to rehabilitate those who lost property in th e disaster. From this perspective, it is apparent that the government failed to provide human security. A problem-solving attitude is crucial for any government that intends to secure its public to future life risks. The US is one of the countries that have emphasized on the need for disaster planning including recognition of its roles in preventing disasters and reduces loss in case of a happening. Katrina happened 3 years after the formation of the department of Homeland Security and one year after the formation of the Disaster response plan2. The purpose of the disaster response plan unit was to prepare for disaster management and to provide the public with security when such events
